Why Hong Kong is more than a stopover city

Hong Kong is dense, fast and easy. In three or four days you can eat dim sum in a Kowloon tea house, ride the Star Ferry, see the skyline from the Peak and still spend a day walking a hill trail above empty beaches. Much of the territory is protected country park, which surprises most first-time visitors.

It works as the first or last stop on a longer trip, before Japan, Vietnam or the Philippines, or as a long weekend with Macau. We choose a harbour-view hotel, plan the eating carefully, and get you out to Lantau and Sai Kung.

The honest caveat is summer. From June to September it is hot and very humid, and typhoons can stop ferries and flights for a day. October to December is clear, dry and much more pleasant.

Things worth doing in Hong Kong

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • A green and white Star Ferry crossing Victoria Harbour with the Hong Kong skyline behind

The Star Ferry and Victoria Peak

The Star Ferry has crossed between Tsim Sha Tsui and Central since the nineteenth century, and the harbour view from its wooden decks is still the classic introduction. Ride the Peak Tram up to Victoria Peak early to beat queues, then walk the level circuit of Lugard Road for views across the city and harbour. Clear autumn days give the best visibility.

    Best October to January

  • Translucent har gow shrimp dumplings in a bamboo steamer at a Hong Kong dim sum restaurant

    Dim sum and Cantonese cooking

Hong Kong is a city to plan around meals. Start with dim sum in an old-style tea house, where trolleys still circulate, then eat roast goose, wonton noodles and egg tarts. Sheung Wan and Sham Shui Po are good for traditional places; Central has the ambitious modern Cantonese kitchens. A food guide on your first day is worth it.

    Good all year

  • The bronze Tian Tan Buddha seated above wooded hills at Ngong Ping on Lantau Island

The Big Buddha and Tai O on Lantau

Lantau is Hong Kong’s largest island and mostly country park. Take the cable car to Ngong Ping for the Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, then continue to Tai O, a fishing village of stilt houses where shrimp paste dries in the sun. Go on a weekday and book cable car tickets ahead to avoid queues.

    Best October to March

  • View from the Dragon's Back ridge over green hills to Shek O and islands in the South China Sea

Dragon’s Back and the Sai Kung beaches

The Dragon’s Back is a ridge walk on Hong Kong Island with views down to Shek O and the South China Sea, finishing at Big Wave Bay beach. For wilder country, Sai Kung has volcanic rock columns in the UNESCO Global Geopark and quiet beaches reached by boat or on foot. Go in the cooler months and start early.

    Best October to March

  • The West Kowloon waterfront, home to the M+ museum, seen across Victoria Harbour below the ICC tower

Art and design in West Kowloon

The West Kowloon Cultural District has turned reclaimed harbourfront into a quarter of museums and parks. M+ is a large museum of visual culture, with design, architecture and moving image, and the Hong Kong Palace Museum shows treasures from Beijing’s Forbidden City. The waterfront park has a wide view of the skyline at sunset.

    Good all year

  • Colourful lanterns hung overhead in Victoria Park, Hong Kong, for the Mid-Autumn Festival

Lanterns, dragon boats and bun towers

Festivals are when Hong Kong feels most local. Chinese New Year brings fireworks over the harbour, and the Cheung Chau Bun Festival in spring has parades and a tower of buns to climb. Dragon boat races are held in early summer. For the Mid-Autumn Festival in September or October, parks fill with lanterns.

Best January, February, May, June, September and October

Where to stay in Hong Kong

Choose by view and neighbourhood. Central and Admiralty put you by the ferries and restaurants of Hong Kong Island; Tsim Sha Tsui, across the water, has the harbour-front hotels with the skyline in full view.

We match each trip in Hong Kong to hotels, lodges and villas chosen for the way you travel. Tell us what matters and a specialist will suggest two or three that fit.

Autumn is Hong Kong’s best season. From October to December the air is dry and clear, days are warm and the hills are good for walking. January to March is cooler and often grey, and spring brings humidity and sea mist.

Summer is hot, humid and wet, and FCDO notes that the typhoon season runs from May to November. Typhoon signals can stop ferries and flights, so we keep one day flexible.

Health

Healthcare is excellent but costly for visitors, so take insurance. See TravelHealthPro (opens in a new tab). Summer heat is the main practical issue.

Money

The currency is the Hong Kong dollar. An Octopus card pays for transport and small shops, and contactless bank cards now work on much of the network.

Phones and internet

Mobile coverage is excellent and eSIMs are easy. The free government Wi-Fi.HK network covers many public places.

Tipping

Mid-range and smarter restaurants add a 10% service charge, so tipping on top is optional. Round up taxi fares and tip porters.

Entry rules, health advice and safety information change. Always check the FCDO travel advice for Hong Kong (opens in a new tab) before you book and again before you travel.

Hong Kong questions

How many days do we need in Hong Kong?

Three or four nights is ideal. Two days covers the harbour, the Peak and a food day; the third and fourth let you reach Lantau and Sai Kung, which show a side of Hong Kong most visitors miss. Add a night if you want a day trip to Macau across the bridge.

Is Hong Kong good for a family stopover?

Very. It is safe, public transport is excellent, and children love the Star Ferry, the Peak Tram and the cable car to the Big Buddha. Ocean Park and Hong Kong Disneyland are there if needed. Choose a hotel with a pool for summer afternoons, when it is too hot to be outside.

What should we combine Hong Kong with?

Hong Kong is a natural gateway. Japan and the Philippines are short flights away, and so are Vietnam and Thailand. It also works as the start or end of a trip to mainland China, or as a stopover on the way to Australia.

What happens if a typhoon arrives during our stay?

Hong Kong is well prepared. When a high typhoon signal is raised, ferries, buses and many businesses close and people stay indoors, usually for less than a day. Flights may be delayed. We keep one day flexible in summer, and choose hotels with good indoor facilities.
