Why Sri Lanka packs so much into two weeks

Sri Lanka fits ancient kingdoms, cool tea country, wildlife parks and long beaches into an island smaller than Ireland. In two weeks you can climb Sigiriya, watch the evening ceremony at Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth, take the train through the hills, look for leopards and end on the south coast.

The trip is driven, not flown, so a good driver-guide makes the holiday. Distances look short but roads are slow, so we keep most drives under four hours and build in two nights in most places.

The honest caveat is the monsoon. Two monsoons hit different coasts at different times, so there is always a good beach, but not always the one you pictured. Check the latest FCDO advice too, which currently covers flooding and fuel limits.

Things worth doing in Sri Lanka

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • The sheer-sided Sigiriya rock fortress standing above the forest plain with hills beyond

    Sigiriya and the cultural triangle

Sigiriya is a fifth-century palace built on top of a sheer rock, reached by stairways past frescoes and the giant lion’s paws. Climb at opening time to beat the heat. Nearby are the painted cave temples of Dambulla and the ruined royal city of Polonnaruwa, best seen by bicycle. Stay in a lodge among the paddy fields and lakes.

Best January to April and June to September

  • The Temple of the Tooth and its white walls across the calm water of Kandy Lake

Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth

Kandy, the last royal capital, sits around a lake in the hills. The Temple of the Tooth holds a relic of the Buddha, and the evening puja, with drums and offerings of flowers, is the moment to visit. In July or August, the Esala Perahera fills the streets with dancers, drummers and decorated elephants over 10 nights. Book hotels far ahead for it.

Best January to March, July and August

  • Green tea estates rolling across the hills of Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka's hill country

Tea estates and the hill country train

The hills around Hatton, Nuwara Eliya and Ella are cool, green and covered in tea. Stay in a restored planter’s bungalow, walk through the estates with a tea maker and learn how the leaf is withered and rolled. The train from Kandy to Ella is the classic way to see the hills; reserved seats sell out, so we book early.

Best January to April, August and September

  • A Sri Lankan leopard pausing watchfully on a sandy track at the edge of the scrub

Leopards and elephants in the national parks

Yala, in the dry southeast, is known for its leopards, along with sloth bears, elephants and crocodiles. Go on early morning drives with a private jeep and a good tracker, and avoid the most crowded blocks. For elephants, Minneriya and Kaudulla host large gatherings in the dry season, from roughly August to October.

    Best February to September

  • The white lighthouse and palm-lined ramparts of Galle Fort above the sea on Sri Lanka's south coast

Galle Fort and the south coast

Galle’s Dutch fort encloses a small town of churches, villas, cafes and boutiques, best walked along the ramparts at sunset. The coast either side has quiet bays and villa hotels, from Tangalle to Weligama. From December to April, boats leave Mirissa to look for blue whales. Sea conditions change fast in the monsoon, so swim where locals do.

    Best December to April

  • Turquoise shallows and pale sand along the palm-lined shore at Pasikudah on Sri Lanka's east coast

Summer beaches on the east coast

When the southwest monsoon hits the south coast from May, the east is dry and calm. Trincomalee and the long beach at Pasikudah have warm, flat water, good snorkelling at Pigeon Island and a lower-key feel. It makes Sri Lanka a genuine summer holiday destination, and pairs well with Sigiriya, which is only a few hours’ drive inland.

    Best May to September

Where to stay in Sri Lanka

Move between small lodges rather than big hotels. Choose lakeside lodges near Sigiriya, a hillside hotel above Kandy, a tea bungalow near Hatton, a safari camp by Yala, then a villa near Galle or on the east coast depending on the month.

We match each trip in Sri Lanka to hotels, lodges and villas chosen for the way you travel. Tell us what matters and a specialist will suggest two or three that fit.

Sri Lanka has two monsoons. The southwest monsoon brings rain to the west, south and hill country from about May to September, while the east coast is dry. The northeast monsoon reverses this from about November to February.

That makes the island a year-round destination, if you choose the right coast. December to April suits the south and west; May to September suits the east and north. October and November are the unsettled months in between, with rain in most places.

Money

The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee. ATMs across the island take international credit and debit cards, and most hotels, restaurants and larger shops accept cards. If anyone adds a surcharge for paying by card, it is not allowed in Sri Lanka, so you can decline it.

Phones and internet

4G coverage is good across most of the island, and data SIMs are sold at the airport. Most hotels have wifi, which can be slower in the hills.

Tipping

Our advice: your driver-guide is the person to thank properly, at the end of the trip, and small rupee notes are useful for hotel staff, safari trackers and temple shoe-minders along the way. Ask us for current suggested amounts before you go.

Sri Lanka questions

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

January to April is the best time for a classic trip: the cultural triangle, the hills and the south coast are all dry. From May to September, the south coast is wet, but the east coast is at its best and the ancient cities are fine, so a summer trip simply finishes in Trincomalee instead of Galle.

How long do we need for Sri Lanka?

Between 12 and 14 nights lets you see the ancient cities, Kandy, the tea hills, a national park and the coast at a comfortable pace. With 10 nights, drop one region, usually the national park or the hills. With a week, we suggest the cultural triangle and a beach, and saving the rest for a return trip.

Is Sri Lanka good for families?

Very good, especially for children who like animals. Elephants, leopards, turtles and monkeys are all part of a normal trip, and Sri Lankans are warm with children. Keep drives short, pick hotels with pools, and choose calm beaches such as those near Tangalle or on the east coast in summer.

Can we combine Sri Lanka with the Maldives?

Yes, and it is a natural pairing. The Maldives is about an hour and a half from Colombo by air, so you can finish a week or 10 days of culture and wildlife with four or five nights on a reef. The two work best together from December to April, when both are dry.
