Aman Tokyo

Large, calm suites on the top floors of an Otemachi tower, a short walk from Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace Gardens.

These photographs show Japan. Photography of Aman Tokyo itself is on its way from the property; ask us and we will send it.

Why we love it

Aman Tokyo solves the first problem of any Japan trip: arriving jet-lagged into an enormous city. The lobby is a tall, quiet space of stone and washi paper, the suites start at 71 square metres, and every one has a deep furo bath. On a clear winter morning you can see Mount Fuji from the upper floors.

The location is the practical win. Otemachi subway station is under the building and Tokyo Station, with its bullet trains to Kyoto and beyond, is a short walk away, so a last night here makes an early train painless. The 30-metre pool on the 34th floor is the place to recover after a day on foot.

It is not the place for neon and nightlife: Otemachi is a business district and goes quiet after dark, so you will take taxis to Shibuya or Ginza for evenings out. Couples and solo travellers love it most. Families fit well in the larger suites, but there is no dedicated children’s programme.

The most common suite, at 71 square metres, with a combined bedroom and living area and views towards the Imperial Palace Gardens and Mount Fuji.

  • Garden View Suite

The same 71-square-metre layout as the Deluxe Suite, set on the top floor for a higher view over the gardens.

  • Tokyo Suite

A 77-square-metre suite facing east for the sunrise, with a sunken lounge and daybed.

  • Grand Suite

A 141-square-metre suite with plenty of space and light, a customisable workspace and wide city views.

  • Panorama Suite

A 139-square-metre corner suite with dual-aspect views, separate bedroom, living and dining areas and a small wine cellar.

  • Aman Suite

The largest suites at 157 square metres, with dual-aspect views over the Imperial Palace Gardens towards Mount Fuji.

Dining

Musashi by Aman is a small counter serving Edomae-style sushi and is the meal to book ahead. Arva serves seasonal Italian cooking in front of the palace gardens, The Lounge by Aman does light meals and afternoon tea under the tall lobby ceiling, and The Café by Aman at street level looks onto the Otemachi Forest.

Wellness

The Aman Spa covers 2,500 square metres over two floors, with eight treatment rooms, a 30-metre heated indoor pool, a traditional Japanese bath, steam rooms, a gym and yoga and Pilates studios.

Children and families

Ask us about the current policy for younger children. The larger suites give families real space, but the hotel is geared to adults.

1Aman Tokyo

A few of the things we plan for guests in Japan.

  • Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, mirrored in its still pond among pine-covered islets

Temples, gardens and geisha lanes in Kyoto

Kyoto has hundreds of temples, so choose a few and go early. Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji and its rock garden sit together in the northwest; Ginkaku-ji and the Philosopher’s Path in the east. In the evening, walk the lanes of Gion and Pontocho. A private guide for one day repays itself in context and in avoided queues.

  • Autumn maples in red, orange and gold covering the hills above Lake Ashi in Hakone

A night in a Hakone ryokan

A ryokan is a traditional inn: tatami rooms, a multi-course kaiseki dinner in your yukata and a hot-spring bath before bed. Hakone, 90 minutes from Tokyo, has a good choice, with Mount Fuji views on clear winter mornings. Choose a room with a private outdoor bath if you are shy of communal bathing. One or two nights is plenty.

  • The red five-storey pagoda and temple halls of Senso-ji in Asakusa, Tokyo, under a clear blue sky

Tokyo one neighbourhood at a time

Tokyo is a city of villages. Spend a morning in Asakusa around Senso-ji, an afternoon in the backstreets of Yanaka, and an evening in the tiny bars of Shibuya or Golden Gai. Tsukiji outer market is best for breakfast. A food guide for the first night helps with menus and seating etiquette.
