Mulia Bali

Three resorts in one on a kilometre of calm Geger Beach in Nusa Dua: an all-suite hotel, a big family resort and a private pool-villa enclave.

These photographs show Bali. Photography of Mulia Bali itself is on its way from the property; ask us and we will send it.

Why we love it

Mulia Bali is three properties sharing one stretch of Geger Beach. Mulia Resort is the lively family hub, The Mulia is the all-suite beachfront hotel with butlers, and Mulia Villas is the quiet pool-villa enclave on the hill. Guests in The Mulia and the Villas get their own pools, including the Oasis infinity pool.

This is our first call for families in Bali. The beach faces east with calm water that suits small swimmers, there are two kids clubs split by age, a teens zone and a splash pool with slides. Nine restaurants and bars mean nobody tires of the menu on a two-week stay.

It is big and it is busy, especially in school holidays. Couples after peace should book The Mulia or the Villas, not the main resort. Nusa Dua is a manicured enclave, so for the Bali of temples and rice terraces you will need to head out on day trips.

Dining

Nine restaurants and bars cover most moods. Table8 serves Cantonese cooking and dim sum, Edogin is Japanese with teppanyaki and robatayaki, Soleil does Mediterranean and Pan-Asian food by the beach with a well-known Sunday brunch, and The Cafe runs international buffets with live cooking stations. Cannelé, Cascade Lounge, The Bar with live music most nights, and Sky Bar complete the list, plus a Dessert Room children love.

Wellness

Mulia Spa has 20 treatment rooms, hydrotherapy pools, Finnish saunas, steam rooms and an ice room. There is a large gym, a movement studio, tennis and pickleball, and a long list of complimentary classes from sunrise yoga to aerial yoga.

Children and families

Mulia Kidz takes children aged three to eight, Mulia Kidz Explorer aged eight to 12, and there is a teens zone for ages nine to 15. The splash pool has slides and needs parental supervision. Swimming, yoga and tennis lessons for children are available at extra cost.

1Mulia Bali

A few of the things we plan for guests in Bali.

  • Stepped green rice terraces edged with coconut palms near Ubud, Bali

Rice terraces and craft villages around Ubud

Ubud sits among rice fields, gorges and craft villages. Walk the Campuhan ridge at dawn, visit the terraces at Tegallalang early before the crowds, and see stone carving and silverwork in the villages nearby. For a quieter view, drive west to Jatiluwih, where the terraces are watered by the ancient subak irrigation system.

  • Forested limestone cliffs at Uluwatu dropping into the deep blue Indian Ocean, Bali

Uluwatu temple and the kecak at sunset

Pura Luhur Uluwatu stands on a sea cliff at the southern tip of the island. At sunset, a kecak performance is held in the amphitheatre beside it, with a circle of men chanting the story of the Ramayana. Arrive early for a good seat and hold on to sunglasses, because the temple monkeys are quick. Stay on the Bukit for clifftop villas and surf beaches.

  • Sunrise breaking over the clouds and distant peaks seen from the summit of Mount Batur, Bali

    Sunrise from Mount Batur

Mount Batur is an active volcano in a huge caldera, and the classic walk starts in the dark to reach the rim by sunrise. On a clear morning you see the lake below and Mount Agung and Lombok’s Rinjani on the horizon. It takes about two hours up, on loose ground, so wear proper shoes. Go in the dry season and pair it with hot springs on the lakeshore.
