The Oberoi, Bali

Thatched lanais and pool villas in 16 acres of gardens on Seminyak Beach, with the shops and restaurants of Seminyak a short walk away.

These photographs show Bali. Photography of The Oberoi, Bali itself is on its way from the property; ask us and we will send it.

Why we love it

The Oberoi is Seminyak for people who do not want the scene. It sits on 16 acres of gardens with direct access to 500 metres of beach, laid out like a village of thatched buildings. Step outside the gate, though, and you are walking distance from Seminyak's shops and restaurants.

We like it as a good-value choice at the top end. The Lanai rooms put you on the beach for less than most villa resorts, and the pool villas give you real privacy for a modest step up. Sunsets on this west-facing coast are the other reason to come, best watched from Kayu Bar.

The style is classic rather than new: dark wood, marble baths, four-poster beds. If you want the latest design hotel, look elsewhere. The surf at Seminyak can be strong, so on many days swimming is more about the pool than the ocean.

Rooms and villas

  • Garden View Lanai

A thatched room with king or twin beds, a bathroom looking onto a private walled garden and a terrace for eating outside.

  • Ocean View Lanai

A spacious room with a living area and glass doors opening onto a private terrace facing the sea.

  • Luxury Garden View Villa with Pool

A thatched villa of 350 to 400 square metres with a king bedroom, marble bathroom, private pool and a pavilion for dining outside.

  • Luxury Ocean View Villa with Pool

A villa of 200 to 400 square metres with a canopied king bed, large terrace, private pool and a dining pavilion with sea views.

  • Royal Ocean View Villa with Pool

The largest villa at about 400 square metres, with a separate living room, sunken marble bath and a large private pool among frangipani trees.

Dining

Kura Kura, named after the sea turtles that nest nearby, is the thatched open-air restaurant with ocean views. Frangipani Cafe serves meals just steps from the beach, The Amphitheatre hosts themed dinners with Balinese dance, and Kayu Bar is the candlelit spot for cocktails at sunset.

Wellness

The Oberoi Spa has thatched treatment rooms over gardens and lily ponds, offering Balinese, Western and Oberoi signature treatments. There is a beachfront pool and an air-conditioned gym overlooking the gardens.

Children and families

Up to two children under 12 can share their parents' room with one extra bed at no charge, though not every room type takes an extra bed. There is no kids club advertised, so it suits families who want a calm beach base rather than organised activities.

A few of the things we plan for guests in Bali.

  • Stepped green rice terraces edged with coconut palms near Ubud, Bali

Rice terraces and craft villages around Ubud

Ubud sits among rice fields, gorges and craft villages. Walk the Campuhan ridge at dawn, visit the terraces at Tegallalang early before the crowds, and see stone carving and silverwork in the villages nearby. For a quieter view, drive west to Jatiluwih, where the terraces are watered by the ancient subak irrigation system.

  • Forested limestone cliffs at Uluwatu dropping into the deep blue Indian Ocean, Bali

Uluwatu temple and the kecak at sunset

Pura Luhur Uluwatu stands on a sea cliff at the southern tip of the island. At sunset, a kecak performance is held in the amphitheatre beside it, with a circle of men chanting the story of the Ramayana. Arrive early for a good seat and hold on to sunglasses, because the temple monkeys are quick. Stay on the Bukit for clifftop villas and surf beaches.

  • Sunrise breaking over the clouds and distant peaks seen from the summit of Mount Batur, Bali

    Sunrise from Mount Batur

Mount Batur is an active volcano in a huge caldera, and the classic walk starts in the dark to reach the rim by sunrise. On a clear morning you see the lake below and Mount Agung and Lombok’s Rinjani on the horizon. It takes about two hours up, on loose ground, so wear proper shoes. Go in the dry season and pair it with hot springs on the lakeshore.
