The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius

Thatched pavilions and pool villas in 20 acres of gardens on Turtle Bay, a protected marine park on the sunset side of the island.

Why we love it

The Oberoi is all about space and quiet. Thatched pavilions and villas are spread through 20 acres of gardens on Turtle Bay, a protected marine park, and most villas have their own pool, some 16 metres long. It faces west, so every evening ends with the sun going down over the water.

Service is gentle and very good, and the daily Touching Senses programme of yoga, t'ai chi, stargazing, cooking and rum tasting is included. On the Rocks, a seafood restaurant with tables on volcanic rocks above the sea, is the dinner to book early.

It is best for couples and honeymooners. There is no kids club, and one of the two pools is for adults only, so young families will find more to do elsewhere. You are also about an hour by car from the airport.

Children and families

Children are welcome and the larger villas suit families, but there is no kids club. The Turtle Bay pool is for adults only, while the On the Rocks pool is open to all guests.

A few of the things we plan for guests in Mauritius.

  • The basalt mass of Le Morne Brabant above the calm lagoon and shoreline trees, Mauritius

Climbing Le Morne and its lagoon

Le Morne Brabant, the basalt mountain on the south-west tip, is a UNESCO World Heritage site: runaway slaves once sheltered on its slopes. A guided hike to the summit takes about three hours return, with a steep, rocky final section. Start at dawn. Below, the lagoon is a well-known kitesurfing spot.

  • Forested ridges folding into the deep green valleys of Black River Gorges National Park, Mauritius

    Hiking the Black River Gorges

The Black River Gorges National Park protects most of what remains of the island's native forest. Trails lead down through the gorges to waterfalls and viewpoints, and you may see the Mauritius kestrel and pink pigeon, both brought back from the edge of extinction. Hike with a guide in the cooler, drier months.

  • Aldabra giant tortoises resting on the grass in south-west Mauritius

Rare wildlife on Île aux Aigrettes

Île aux Aigrettes is a small coral island off the south-east coast, restored as a nature reserve. Guided walks lead through the coastal ebony forest to see Aldabra giant tortoises, pink pigeons and native geckos. Boats leave from near Mahébourg. It pairs well with snorkelling in nearby Blue Bay Marine Park.
