Velaa is the Maldives island we suggest when the brief is "just us". It can be booked as a whole-island buyout for a big birthday or anniversary, and even on a normal stay it runs at a quiet pace, with a personal butler for every villa and a team that remembers returning guests.
It has things other islands do not. There is a nine-hole par-3 course designed by José María Olazábal with PGA coaching, a spa with a snow room, a teppanyaki restaurant at the top of a tower with the Maldives' largest private wine cellar hidden inside, and four private residences of 1,324 square metres, two of them by Patricia Urquiola and Winch Design.
The price reflects all of this, and the atmosphere is polished rather than rustic, so barefoot purists may prefer Soneva Fushi. The seaplane takes about 45 minutes, which is further than a speedboat island but short for the far north.
The overwater starting point: 223 square metres with one bedroom and a 7-metre pool above the lagoon.

Aragu is the fine-dining restaurant, East meets West with a pianist in the evenings. Tavaru serves teppanyaki at the top of its tower, above the island's wine cellar. Faiy is fresh, garden-led cooking, Athiri is the relaxed all-day restaurant, Cru is the Champagne bar, and AVI and the Beach Bar cover the pool and the sand.
The overwater Velaa Spa offers massages, facials, advanced Swiss skin treatments, a sauna and steam, Cloud 9 and Dream Pod experiences, a hair and beauty studio and the Maldives' only snow room.
Children are very welcome. Lha Velaa Kids Club runs island quests, crafts, cooking classes, indoor climbing and water play, and its team is validated by Worldwide Kids and the Luxury Childcare Association.

Noonu Atoll, Maldives

Hanifaru Bay is a small, shallow bay in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. During the southwest monsoon, tides and currents trap plankton in the bay and manta rays, sometimes whale sharks, gather to feed, most reliably July to October. It is snorkel only, with licensed guides and capped numbers. Stay in Baa so you can go when mantas are reported.
The outer reef of South Ari Atoll, around Dhigurah and Maamigili, is known for juvenile whale sharks, which are seen here all year. Boats patrol the reef edge and you slip in to snorkel as one passes. Keep your distance and never touch.
A house reef is the coral wall that rings your island, and the best ones start a few fins from the beach. Expect turtles, blacktip reef sharks and eagle rays. Ask for a guided swim on the first day to learn the currents and exit points.
