Why Belize pairs rainforest and reef in one short trip

Belize is small enough that a Maya temple at breakfast and a reef dive the next afternoon is an ordinary itinerary. Inland, the Cayo District has jungle lodges on the Macal River and Caracol, the largest archaeological reserve in the country. Offshore lies the reef, with three atolls beyond it.

It suits couples and families who want adventure without long transfers, and English is the official language. We usually split a trip between Cayo and one of the cayes or Placencia, using short domestic flights.

The honest caveats: it is a long journey from the UK, with a change in the US, and the lodges are comfortable rather than grand. Rainy season runs from June to November, and the water on the reef is clearest in the dry months.

Things worth doing in Belize

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • Stepped limestone terraces of the Caana pyramid at Caracol, framed by rainforest trees in western Belize

Caracol, the great Maya city of the Chiquibul

Caracol lies about 50 miles from San Ignacio in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, and its Caana complex rises some 139 feet, the tallest building in Belize. The road in is long, so leave early and stop at the Rio On pools in the Mountain Pine Ridge on the way back.

    Best December to April

  • Aerial view of the Great Blue Hole on Lighthouse Reef, a deep blue circle ringed by turquoise shallows and coral

The Great Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef

The Blue Hole is a circular sinkhole about 1,000 feet across and 412 feet deep on Lighthouse Reef atoll, with stalactites on its walls. Divers descend the edge; everyone else sees it best on a scenic flight. Day trips leave from San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Placencia, and the crossing can be rough.

    Best February to May

  • Nurse shark gliding over pale sand in clear turquoise water off Ambergris Caye, Belize

Snorkelling Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley

Hol Chan Marine Reserve starts about four miles south of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. Its waters are thick with fish and green and loggerhead turtles, and in Shark Ray Alley docile nurse sharks glide beneath you. It is an easy half day and good for confident young swimmers.

    Best January to May

  • Palm-fringed white sand and clear turquoise water at Laughing Bird Caye, off the Placencia coast of Belize

    Whale sharks at Gladden Spit

From March to June, whale sharks gather at Gladden Spit off Placencia to feed on fish spawn, from two days before to about 10 days after each full moon. Divers and snorkellers go out by boat from Placencia. Sightings are likely rather than certain, so plan several nights.

    Best March to June

  • Forested ridges and valleys of the Maya Mountains rolling into the distance in Belize

Jaguar country in the Cockscomb Basin

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary was set up to protect jaguars. You are unlikely to see a cat, but the tracks of jaguar and tapir are often seen on the trails. Walk to the waterfalls, or climb Tiger Fern Trail for a view across the basin. It is an easy day from Placencia or Hopkins.

    Best January to April

  • Palms and seabirds over the grassy shore and clear turquoise shallows of Half Moon Caye, the Lighthouse Reef island where red-footed boobies nest

Red-footed boobies on Half Moon Caye

Half Moon Caye, on Lighthouse Reef, is a protected monument with a major colony of red-footed boobies nesting in the littoral forest. It sits on the same atoll as the Blue Hole, so the two combine well in one long day by boat, with snorkelling off the caye in between.

Where to stay in Belize

Most trips pair a jungle lodge with a beach. In Cayo, stay near San Ignacio on the Macal River or higher in the pine forest of the Mountain Pine Ridge. For the coast, Ambergris Caye is the liveliest with the most choice, Placencia and Hopkins are quieter and closer to the southern reef, and the outer atolls are the most remote.

We match each trip in Belize to hotels, lodges and villas chosen for the way you travel. Tell us what matters and a specialist will suggest two or three that fit.

Excellent, good and mixed describe weather, wildlife and crowds together. Mixed months can still be very good for the right trip; ask us.

Belize has two seasons. The dry season runs from December to March or April, with very little rain and pleasant temperatures; a December cold front can drop nights to about 13°C. Lodges are fullest then.

The rainy season runs from June to November and overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season. It is the least touristy time, hotels offer their best rates and summer brings the lobster festivals. Between March and June, the full moons bring whale sharks to Gladden Spit, and April and May catch them in dry weather.

Before you go

Practical notes checked against their sources. For entry and safety, the FCDO advice for Belize (opens in a new tab) is always the authority.

Getting there

There are no direct flights from the UK. The usual route is Heathrow to a US hub such as Houston or Miami, then about two and a half hours to Belize City. Because you connect in the US, you need US travel approval even in transit.

Entry requirements

UK passport holders can currently visit Belize without a visa. Check the FCDO entry requirements (opens in a new tab) before you book, as rules change.

Health

See TravelHealthPro (opens in a new tab) and the FCDO health page (opens in a new tab) before you travel. The FCDO notes that medical facilities are limited and serious cases are usually evacuated to the US, so good insurance matters. Bring reef-safe sun cream and insect repellent.

Money

The Belize dollar is fixed at two to one US dollar, and US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. Check which currency a price is quoted in.

Phones and internet

DigiCell, the national operator, sells prepaid data plans from its DigiStores, which is often cheaper than UK roaming. Signal can be patchy in the Mountain Pine Ridge and on remote cayes.

Tipping

Check bills for a service charge before adding a tip. Guides, boat crews and drivers are usually tipped in cash, and US dollars are fine.

Belize questions

When is the best time to visit Belize?

December to April is the dry season, with little rain, clear water and comfortable temperatures. April and May add whale sharks at Gladden Spit. June to November is the rainy season and overlaps hurricane season, with lower prices but more disruption.

How do we split our time between jungle and beach?

For a 10-night trip, we suggest four nights in Cayo and six on the coast, split between Placencia and Ambergris Caye or kept in one place. Go inland first, while you have the energy for Caracol, and finish on the beach.

Is Belize good for families?

Yes, for children who enjoy the outdoors. English is the official language, distances are short and the reef has sheltered snorkelling at Hol Chan. Cave trips and the Blue Hole crossing suit older children.

Do we need to dive to see the reef?

No. Snorkelling at Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley and Laughing Bird Caye shows you corals, turtles and rays in shallow water. The Blue Hole is best seen from the air if you do not dive. Divers get the deep walls of Lighthouse Reef and, in season, whale sharks at Gladden Spit.
