Why Canada is a country of seasons, not places

Canada is enormous, and what you see depends on the month. The lakes of the Rockies thaw to that milky turquoise in summer, larches turn gold for a few weeks in September, and polar bears gather at Churchill only in October and November.

For a first trip we pair the Rockies with the Pacific coast: Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, then Vancouver and the wild west coast of Vancouver Island around Tofino. It works from June to early October and suits families as well as couples.

The caveat is popularity. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are busy in July and August, and Moraine Lake Road is closed to private cars, so the shuttles need booking. Stay at the lakes themselves and you see them before and after the crowds.

Things worth doing in Canada

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • Glacier-blue Moraine Lake beneath the snow-streaked Valley of the Ten Peaks in Banff National Park

Lake Louise and Moraine Lake at first light

Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles all year, so you reach it by Parks Canada shuttle, a licensed operator or as a guest of Moraine Lake Lodge. Stay by the water at Lake Louise and walk up to the Lake Agnes Tea House before the day visitors arrive.

    Best June to September

  • Turquoise Peyto Lake below forested slopes and snow-streaked peaks, seen from Bow Summit above the Icefields Parkway, Banff National Park

    Drive the Icefields Parkway

The Icefields Parkway runs 232 km between Lake Louise and Jasper, past Bow and Peyto lakes and the Athabasca Glacier at the Columbia Icefield. Services along the road run from early May to mid-October and there is no year-round mobile coverage, so fill the tank and download your maps before you set off.

    Best June to September

  • Golden autumn larches in Larch Valley below snowy rock peaks, Banff National Park, Alberta

    Golden larches in September

From about mid-September, alpine larches light up the high valleys above Lake Louise and Moraine Lake for a few weeks. Larch Valley and the Sentinel Pass trail are the classic walks. Start early and carry layers, as frost and early snow are common.

    Best September

  • Curving sand beach and a forested headland at Half Moon Bay near Ucluelet, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

Whales and wild beaches at Tofino

Tofino sits at the end of the road on the west coast of Vancouver Island, beside Clayoquot Sound and the long beaches of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Whales feed in the sound from February to October, mostly grey whales with humpbacks too. In winter, come for the storms.

    Best March to September

  • Polar bears seen from above on the tundra shoreline of Hudson Bay near Churchill, Manitoba

    Polar bears at Churchill

Churchill, on the western shore of Hudson Bay, has no road in. From October to November polar bears gather along the coast waiting for the sea to freeze, and you watch them from tundra vehicles or a remote lodge. In July and August thousands of beluga whales arrive instead. Both seasons book up far ahead.

Best July, August, October and November

  • Green aurora arching across a starry sky above the dark forest outside Whitehorse, Yukon

    Northern lights in the Yukon

The Yukon aurora season runs from mid-August to mid-April, and Whitehorse sits close to the auroral oval. Stay in a lodge outside town, away from the lights, and hope for clear, dark nights. Late August to October is milder and often overlooked; midwinter is darker and much colder.

Best February, March, September and October

Where to stay in Canada

In the Rockies, choose between the grand railway hotels at Banff and Lake Louise, smaller lakeside lodges and cabins near Jasper. On Vancouver Island, stay on the beach between Tofino and Ucluelet. At Churchill and in the Yukon, we choose lodges for their guides first.

We match each trip in Canada to hotels, lodges and villas chosen for the way you travel. Tell us what matters and a specialist will suggest two or three that fit.

    Mixed

Snowy Christmas in Banff. Very cold, with short days.

Excellent, good and mixed describe weather, wildlife and crowds together. Mixed months can still be very good for the right trip; ask us.

Summer in the Rockies is short. The lakes are usually ice-free from mid-June, peak in July and August, and by mid-October the mountain roads are quietening for winter, which runs from November to March with ski resorts open into May.

The rest of the country keeps its own clock. Whales feed off Tofino from February to October, belugas gather off Churchill in July and August, and polar bears come to Hudson Bay in October and November.

Before you go

Practical notes checked against their sources. For entry and safety, the FCDO advice for Canada (opens in a new tab) is always the authority.

Getting there

Heathrow has direct flights to Toronto in about eight hours, to Calgary in about nine and to Vancouver in about 10, so you can fly into the Rockies and home from the coast.

Entry requirements

Most UK passport holders need an eTA before flying to Canada, including to transit. Check the FCDO entry requirements page (opens in a new tab) before you book.

Read the FCDO entry requirements for Canada (opens in a new tab)

Health

Read TravelHealthPro (opens in a new tab) and the FCDO health page before you go. Mountain weather changes fast, so carry layers and water, and in bear country keep to the park rules on food and noise.

Money

The currency is the Canadian dollar. Cards are taken almost everywhere, though a little cash helps in small towns and for taxis in remote places.

Phones and internet

Check your UK roaming plan before you go. Signal is good in towns but patchy in the mountains, and there is no year-round coverage on the Icefields Parkway.

Tipping

Tipping works much as in the USA. Leave 15% of a restaurant bill for good service and 20% for exceptional service, and around 10% for taxis.

Entry rules, health advice and safety information change. Always check the FCDO travel advice for Canada (opens in a new tab) before you book and again before you travel.

Canada questions

When is the best time to visit the Canadian Rockies?

Late June to September. The high lakes are usually thawed from mid-June and at their most vivid in July and August, when every trail is open but crowds are heaviest. September is our pick: golden larches, cooler air and fewer people. Winter, from November to March, is for skiing and frozen lakes rather than hiking.

Can we drive ourselves around the Rockies?

Yes, and it is how we usually plan them. The roads are good and distances manageable: Calgary to Banff is about 90 minutes, and the Icefields Parkway is a full day with stops. The exception is Moraine Lake, reached by shuttle or with a licensed operator.

When can we see polar bears at Churchill?

October and November, when the bears gather on the Hudson Bay coast waiting for the sea ice to form. You watch them from purpose-built tundra vehicles or from a remote lodge. There is no road to Churchill, so you fly or take the train, and the lodges book up well over a year ahead.

Is Canada good for a family holiday?

Very. The Rockies and Vancouver Island suit children of most ages, with short lake walks, canoeing, gondolas and wildlife from the car. School summer holidays coincide with the warmest weather, so book rooms and Moraine Lake shuttles as early as you can.
