Why Dubai works best as a short, sunny break with some substance

Dubai is the easiest long-haul sun from the UK: one direct flight, almost no jet lag and near-certain blue skies from November to March. We add the city that was here before the towers.

That means an abra across the Creek to the Deira souks, a morning in the lanes of Al Fahidi, a night in the desert reserve and a drive to the Hajar Mountains at Hatta. Five nights, split between the Creek and the beach, feels like a proper holiday. Two nights makes a good pause on the way to the Indian Ocean or Asia.

The honest caveat is summer. From June to September the coast sits in the mid-forties with heavy humidity, and life moves indoors. Winter is busy and priced to match.

Things worth doing in Dubai

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • A wooden abra ferry carrying passengers across Dubai Creek past moored dhows and Deira buildings

Old Dubai by abra and on foot

Start in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, a knot of wind-towered coral-stone houses, small museums and cafés on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek. Then cross by abra, the wooden water taxis, to the spice and gold souks of Deira. Go in the late afternoon, when the souks wake up after the midday lull. A local guide earns their fee at the food stops.

    Best November to March

  • The sun rising over low dunes and scattered shrubs in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

A quiet night in the desert reserve

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, under an hour inland, protects red dunes where Arabian oryx and gazelle graze in the open. Staying inside it is nothing like the convoy dune drives sold in town: a camel walk at dawn, falconry at dusk and a very dark sky. One night is enough, between October and April.

    Best October to April

  • The turquoise reservoir of Hatta Dam among the bare, folded peaks of the Hajar Mountains, Dubai

    Kayaking and hiking at Hatta

Hatta sits in the Hajar Mountains near the Omani border, about an hour and a half by road. You can kayak on the turquoise reservoir at Hatta Dam, walk or cycle the marked trails, and see how mountain families lived in the heritage village. Leave early and take plenty of water.

    Best November to March

  • The Dubai skyline and the sail of the Burj Al Arab in soft haze beyond a breakwater at Jumeirah at sunset

Beach days on the Jumeirah coast

The beaches run south-west from Jumeirah to the Marina, with Palm Jumeirah pushing out into the Gulf. The sea is calm and shallow through the winter, which suits young children. Choose Jumeirah for established hotels near the city, the Palm for resort space and the Marina for restaurants on foot.

    Best November to April

  • A food truck parked outside the warehouse buildings and signage of Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz, Dubai

    Galleries in Alserkal Avenue

Alserkal Avenue is a cluster of converted warehouses in industrial Al Quoz, now home to contemporary galleries, an independent cinema and good coffee. It is where we send people to see art from the Gulf, Iran and South Asia, and most galleries are free. Go on a weekday afternoon.

    Best October to April

  • The silver ring of the Museum of the Future among the towers of Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai

Burj Khalifa at opening time and the Museum of the Future

Do the Burj Khalifa observation decks once, at opening time rather than sunset, when queues are shorter and the haze has not built. Pair it with the Museum of the Future, a steel ring wrapped in Arabic calligraphy on Sheikh Zayed Road. Book timed tickets for both before you travel.

Where to stay in Dubai

Pick a base by what you want to walk to. Jumeirah and the Palm are for the beach, the Palm more self-contained. Downtown is for the Burj Khalifa and the big malls. The Creek, around Al Seef and Al Fahidi, has smaller heritage hotels and the most character.

Photographs on these cards show Dubai rather than the properties themselves. Ask us for each property's own photography.

Dubai has a short, dependable winter and a long, punishing summer. From November to March the days are dry and sunny and the sea is calm. This is when the city is at its best and busiest, with school holidays pushing prices higher.

From May to September heat and humidity rule out most outdoor plans, though hotels drop their rates. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year; in 2027 it falls in February and March, changing the rhythm of the city without closing it.

Dubai questions

Is Dubai too hot to visit in summer?

For most holidays, yes. From June to September coastal temperatures sit in the mid-forties with high humidity. August is usually the worst. For beach days, the desert and the old city, come between November and March.

What is it like to visit Dubai during Ramadan?

The city stays open. Hotels, malls and most restaurants run as normal, and visitors are asked to be discreet about eating and drinking in public and to dress a little more modestly. The evenings are the reward, with iftar meals at sunset and night markets. In 2027 Ramadan is expected to run from about 8 February to 8 March.

Should we choose Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Dubai has more restaurants, nightlife and energy. [Abu Dhabi](/destinations/middle-east/abu-dhabi) is calmer and more spacious, with the Louvre, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, mangroves and the Liwa dunes. Families with teenagers often prefer Dubai; couples after quiet beaches and culture often prefer Abu Dhabi. They are about 90 minutes apart by road.

Can you drink alcohol in Dubai?

Yes, in licensed hotels, restaurants and bars. It is illegal to drink or be drunk in public anywhere in the UAE, and alcohol is banned entirely in neighbouring Sharjah, which matters if you drive north.
